Whoopi Goldberg is one of the most bankable, talented, and unique stars in Hollywood. She is very strong willed and committed to her work. Whoopi is very fresh and direct.

Personal Life:
Whoopi Goldberg was born on November 13, 1949, in New York City, as Caryn E. Johnson. Whoopi had one older brother, Clyde. When Whoopi's father, Robert deserted his family, Whoopi's mother, Emma, was left to raise her two children. When Whoopi was eight she started performing with the Helena Rubenstein Children's Theatre. Whoopi attended elementary school at St. Columbia's, a Catholic school in Manhattan. About two weeks into ninth grade she dropped out of school. This was about the time she started using drugs. She spent her time wandering around Central Park, listening to people playing drums and doing drugs. Eventually, she started realizing that she had to stop. Whoopi ended up at the Horizon House, a drug treatment center in New York.
Whoopi and her drug counselor, Martin, were married in 1971. They had one child, Alexandrea, in 1974. Shortly after her child was born, Whoopi moved to California to pursue her acting dream. Her first job there was with an improvisational group of comedians. She did everything from bricklaying to doing the hair and makeup of corpses in a funeral parlor!
At first,Whoopi changed her name to Whoopi Cushion. Her mother wanted a more respectable name, so she changed her name, again, to Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi then moved north to San Francisco, where she joined the Black Street Hawkeyes Theatre in Berkeley. After she moved into solo performances, she made "The Spook Show". She took the show on a national and European tour. When writer and producer Mike Nichols, saw her work, he signed her to an evening on Broadway. As a result, "Whoopi Goldberg on Broadway" opened in 1983. The program was used as a special on HBO, and the stage production won the Grammy for best comedy recording of the year, in 1985.
Whoopi was in her first motion picture, "The Color Purple", in 1985. She played the main character, Celie. She Earned an Oscar nomination, the 1985 Golden Globe, and Image awards for best actress in a motion picture. The next year she won an Emmy for a guest appearance on "Moon Lighting". In 1986, she played in "Comic Relief", with Billy Crystal and Robin Williams. It is now an annual fund-raiser for the homeless. She then saw that her acting career was in serious danger. She found that the only thing Hollywood loves better than a rising star, is a falling star.
She appeared live on stage, did Gap commercials, co-hosted the AIDS television show, "That's What Friends Are For", and took her one woman production on the road. From 1988 to 1993 she made several guest appearances on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", as Guinan, the part she auditioned for when the show was first being cast. She remembered the original "Star Trek", with characters such as Nichelle Nichols, as Uhura. In 1990 Whoopi appeared in "Ghost". As a funky phsycic, Oda Mae Brown, she won plenty of awards, including the Academy award for best supporting actress. In Hollywood, she was a rising star again.
In 1992, she played the teacher of a young girl fighting apartheid, in "Serafina". The same year, she played a detective in "The Player". Later that year, she played a Las Vegas singer and a nun, Sister Mary Clarence, in "Sister Act". In 1993, Whoopi co-starred with Ted Dansen in "Made in America". Later that year, she made a big fat six and a half million dollars for the not-so-successful sequel to "Sister Act", "Sister Act 2, Back in the Habit". Since then she has been in a steady line of films, including "Jumping Jack Flash", "Fatal Beauty", "Clara's Heart", "The Long Walk Home", "Soap Dish", and "Corrina, Corrina".
In 1996 and 1997 Whoopi appeared in movies such as "Boy's on the Side", "Eddie", and "Bogus".
